SUSTAINABILITY

Sterling Caviar is considered by The Monterrey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch as “Best Choice”.

The business is part of the Stolt Sea Farm group, which operates completely sustainably. Its commitment to the environment is shown by the prestigious awards it has garnered around the world, GlobalGAP, Friend of the Sea, ISO 14001 and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

All species of sturgeon have been at risk of extinction for several years. That is why since 1998 they have been protected by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) which regulates and oversees the sale of sturgeon and derived products, among which caviar features. At present, CITES totally forbids the sale of caviar from wild fish so that only caviar from fish farms is a lawful and sustainable product.

Our production model does not have any impact on wild sturgeon populations as our production cycle is completely closed. Farming is carried out in a controlled setting in which we can have rigorous oversight of aspects such as diet, water quality and other factors, using sustainable practices which do not affect the environment. In the controlled setting of our farms, with the use of pure, clean well water, our sturgeon are fed a nutritious balanced diet to ensure optimal growth and wellbeing. We do not use any hormones at any stage of the process (not for fattening of the sturgeon nor for harvest of eggs), and the use of medicines is strictly regulated and supervised by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
